Aaaand… we’re finally getting to it.  I really wanted to introduce the main character in an interesting way.

I love to hike in the desert, and a mind can really wander out there.  You can scramble up a mountain and find a 360-degree, 40-mile view.  It’s not that pretty when you’re right down next to it, but when you get somewhere and appreciate the scope, it’s beautiful.  Miles of emptiness.

I’ve never seen a person out there in a place that just didn’t make sense.  But if there were a person, coming in from a stretch of desert that leads nowhere, all alone with no food or water, walking purposefully in the middle of the hottest part of the day, that person must have a pretty cool story.

This character does have a pretty cool story.  But he’s not going to tell it for a while.
